The tiny Killowen Distillery is located in the heart of the Mournes in County Down, Northern Ireland, where horizons are framed by broad hills that slope gently down to the sea.
Brendan Carty, an Irish architect with a passion for whiskey, decided to devote himself entirely to distilling in 2016, when he began construction work on the microdistillery, which he personally supervised and partly implemented using mostly recycled materials.
His approach is authentically artisanal: in addition to selecting different varieties of grain, not necessarily malted barley, in order to explore as much as possible the different aromatic potentialities, he operates in total autonomy, doing everything by hand and without any production process being automated or standardized. Depending on the grain and the flavor profile sought, Brendan changes production strategies, fermentation times and cuts in the distillation-distillation that takes place in two small artisanal pot stills, hand-built to his design, namely Christoir (1000 liters) and Broc (800 liters).
Its goal is to be an example for the advancement of the Irish whiskey industry, showing integrity in selections, a distillate of quality and transparency as the focus. The packages provide the consumer with full details regarding provenance, production, blend composition, and the type of wood used to age the whiskey. The result of this approach are bottlings that are highly rated and sought after by enthusiasts, making Killowen a true cult Craft Distillery.
Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
