This is the resin of the mastic tree, which in antiquity was known for its healing properties, and was used as a natural additive to wine and also as a perfumed body balm. As far back as 600 B.C., Mastiha was the secret ingredient of a digestive distillate that was well known in the ancient world. Today, the Skinos brand, named after the ancient term for Mastiha, continues this tradition with its revival of the original liqueur, which is one of the most popular in Greece.

The mastiha that makes up this spirit, and which has recently been awarded the designation of origin, is extracted through cuts in the trunk, according to an ancient manual process that takes place once a year. The carefully selected resin crystals are left to macerate in the alcohol for three months, at the end of which distillation takes place in a copper still. After a further three months of rest, sugar is added before bottling and the distillate is diluted with water to reach an alcohol content of 30%.
The result is a sweet-and-sour liqueur, characterised by pleasant bitter notes, whose vegetal and balsamic traits also make it suitable for the preparation of cocktails, or to give a Mediterranean touch to dishes in the kitchen.

Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
