The timing was favourable, as in 1832 the continuous distillation method was invented, allowing the production of better quality gin. Until then, the most popular style of gin had been Old Tom, in which sugar was used to cover imperfections. With continuous distillation, it was no longer necessary to add a sweetener: Tanqueray was therefore one of the first distilleries to create the new style London Dry Gin.
Then, in 1898, Tanqueray joined forces with its then rivals, Gordon's Gin, increasingly asserting its leadership in the gin world and moving production to Cameronbridge, Scotland: one of the largest distilleries in Europe. During the heavy bombing of London in the Second World War, the original distillery was completely destroyed; only one still, Old Tom, was saved and is now preserved in Scotland.
An anecdote tells of the great popularity achieved by this gin: when Prohibition ended in 1933, the first drink drunk at the White House by President Roosevelt was a Tanqueray and Tonic.
Passed over to Diageo in 1986, today the award-winning Tanqueray is one of the best known and best-selling gins in the world, yet it is still made according to the ancient recipe dating back to 1838.
Its secret is jealously guarded, yet the gin is said to contain only four botanicals: juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root and liquorice. The method used is the 'one shot' method, whereby exact quantities of botanicals are used in the right amount of alcohol: the resulting gin is ready to be bottled directly, without having to be diluted.
Tanqueray is distilled four times to achieve maximum smoothness, and also to enhance the flavours of the four botanicals, which are perfectly balanced.
Loved by bartenders all over the world, Tanqueray is perfect with tonic water, plenty of ice and a wedge of lime, but it is also a versatile base for many other cocktails.
In response to the growing demand for non-alcoholic beverages, Tanqueray's master distillers have designed a solution that allows the same unique taste experience as the brand, but without alcohol. Tanqueray's four distinctive botanicals are soaked in water, heated and distilled individually, achieving the usual balance that has made this gin famous. The result is a citrus profile dominated by juniper, which retains its delicate complexity and is also low in calories.
Tanqueray 0.0% is perfect mixed with quality tonic water, ice and a slice of lime, but is also excellent as a base for many non-alcoholic cocktails.
Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
