It all begins in 1957, of course in Hawaii; here, legendary bartender Harry Yee of the Hilton Hawaiian Village receives daily requests from droves of tourists, eager to try exotic local drinks. Legend has it that Yee was also approached by a well-known Blue Curaçao manufacturing company, and he took the chance: the liquor's iridescent color, so similar to the glimpse of Honolulu's beaches, immediately attracted attention and won a good chunk of admirers.
True success, however, came starting in 1961, when the musical comedy Blue Hawaii smashed the box office, thanks to the presence of the hugely popular Elvis Presley in the title role and idyllic scenery.

Interestingly, many people are convinced that this cocktail came about as a result of the success of the film, whereas Harry Yee was inspired by Waikiki Wedding, a 1937 film starring Bing Crosby, of which he was a great admirer, and which included the original version of the song 'Blue Hawaii.'
The original version of Blue Hawaii consists of vodka, rum, Blue Curaçao, pineapple juice and a sour-sweet mix that you can easily make at home with water, sugar and lime juice. You may happen, however, to request this drink and instead be served a Blue Hawaiian, i.e., one of the variations created later, which has contributed to considerable confusion. This version does not include vodka and instead contains coconut cream and sometimes cream.
- 20 ml white rum
- 20 ml vodka
- 15 ml Blue Curaçao
- 30 ml Sweet & Sour Mix (mix 1 part sugar with 1 part water, then add fresh lime juice)
- 90 ml fresh pineapple juice
Pour all ingredients into a shaker, shake and pour into a Hurricane chalice filled with ice.
Decorate with a pineapple slice and a cherry.
For a more authentic and tasty result, pineapple juice should be prepared fresh, using an extractor.
You can use a blender instead of a shaker, inserting ice in addition to the ingredients and blending until no more solid ice remains.
If you prefer, you can also omit the vodka to make a lighter drink.
- 30 ml white rum
- 20 ml Blue Curaçao
- 90 ml fresh pineapple juice
- 30 ml coconut cream
Prepare the pineapple juice with the extractor and add the juice of half a freshly squeezed lime.
Pour all ingredients into a blender along with ice and blend for about 20 seconds (never more).
Decorate with a pineapple slice and a cherry-if desired, adding a pineapple leaf.
The ice should never be excessive, so as not to turn the cocktail into a frozen. As mentioned, a little cream can be added if desired.
Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
