It was also here, between 1946 and 1948, that George Orwell wrote his masterpiece, the dystopian 1984. With only one road, only one pub, only one whisky distillery and a very special microclimate, it is not the easiest place to make whisky, but it is certainly the most atmospheric.
At the northern tip of this island is Europe's third largest whirlpool, the Corryvreckan, which inspired the iconic shape of the whisky bottles: sinuous, strong enough to withstand the dangers of this treacherous body of water.
It is the small village of Craighouse that is home to the distillery, as well as the shop, pub, tea room, Jura Hotel and most of the island's community of around 200 people - for more than 5,000 beautiful red deer.

Founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell under the name Small Isles Distillery, taken over in 1875 by James Ferguson, the island's distillery was closed in 1901 due to a dispute and fell into disrepair. Then, in 1960, property owners Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, eager to revive the local economy, rebuilt the current facility, entrusting the work to William Delme-Evans.
The distillers therefore immediately focused on the precise objective of producing the best Single Malt possible, milder than the usual Highland Single Malt, yet with the characteristic smoky notes mixed with sweetness.

The first bottle of Isle of Jura Pure Malt 10 Year Old appeared on the market in May 1974.
The Single Malt of Jura has the ambition to encapsulate in each bottle a little of the island where it was born, the community and its passion for whisky. It is a journey that begins with water, coming from the summit of the Paps of Jura, the highest on the island. The water, sometimes in the form of snow, seeps from the mountain range down to the Market Loch below, then down to the distillery via streams and waterfalls, and here it is used to create the Single Malt.
As mentioned, the stills are some of the tallest of any distillery in the area; getting them to this remote island was a real feat, motivated by the fact that the taller the stills, the purer the spirit.
The search for top quality ingredients and materials continues with the selection and sourcing of some of the world's best casks.
Jura's iconic bottles, with their rounded edges, were symbolically designed to withstand the difficult sea voyages from the island to the far corners of the globe.

Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
