Deeply rooted in this philosophy, the Sông Cái distillery produces distillates that perfectly capture the aromas from the vast biodiversity of this country.
Sông Cái means 'Mother River': according to Vietnamese tradition, rivers metaphorically represent the totality and origin of life.
The distillery was founded in 2018 by American-Vietnamese Daniel Nguyen who, after many years spent studying the biodiversity and ethnobotany of rural Vietnam, joined forces with some northern areas gatherers and growers to source the necessary botanicals, all strictly local.
Today, Sông Cái collaborates with over 70 families belonging to rural communities, to preserve local flora and traditions and to produce the first 100% Vietnamese gin.
The Sông Cái gin range draws its origins from the Vietnamese culinary philosophy, based on the balance between 'hot' and 'cold' energies.
This is why, therefore, the award-winning Dry Gin draws on the entire spectrum of the palate with a harmonious fusion of 16 botanicals from Southeast Asia, which include jungle pepper, black cardamom, green turmeric, licorice and local pomelo. The Floral Gin, for its part, takes us to the mountains and deltas of Vietnam, with a bouquet of 5 flowers: dragon claw, ylang ylang, jasmine, michelia alba and pomelo.
All botanicals, fruits and flowers are harvested by hand.

Sông Cái gins are handcrafted in small batches, in small direct-flame copper stills that are fed by hand.
The production techniques have their roots in the Vietnamese tradition for some aspects – the direct flame, the small batches and the size of the stills – but remain in the context of western influence, with the use of copper stills, barrels in wood for aging and juniper berries.
The Sông Cái distillery works closely with rural communities, maintaining some fixed points: the right payment for botanicals; funding reforestation programs; the preservation of the local flora; ongoing educational support. The ultimate goal is to create inclusive economic growth while strengthening the rural community and preserving Vietnam's cultural heritage.
Even the bottle labels are inspired by an ancient pictorial style that takes the name of Hàng Trong, and were designed by Lê Dình Nghiên, the last artist representing this style.

Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
