Despite being one of the youngest distilleries in the Caribbean, Foursquare has already come a long way.
The Seale family, so important to the history of rum in Barbados over the last hundred years, began to make its mark with Réginald Léon Seale: at the age of thirteen he was an apprentice blender under his father, and after 43 years he set up R. L. Seale & Co. Limited, starting his own business as a blender, bottler and trader.
His main brand is R.L.Seale, made from rum from the West Indies Rum Refinery and the Barbados Rum Distillery. The business continued with the arrival of his son Reginald Clarence in 1946, and grandson David in 1962.
In 1992 David's son Richard joined the business and in 1993 competitor Alleyne Arthur's, owner of Doorly's, Old Brigand and other brands, was acquired.
Foursquare Distillery is located on the former site of the Foursquare Plantation and Sugar Mill, which operated from 1636 to 1984. Designed in 1996 by an Italian company, Green Engineering, it is considered one of the most advanced distilleries in the world.

The molasses come from Barbados and various Caribbean countries, and are fermented for 44 hours in four 40 000 litre cuvées, adding a part of the must previously fermented in the mother cuvée. The distillation is carried out both in a double column with 40 copper plates and in a splendid Forsyth Double Retort pot still: one can therefore say that it is a triple distillation.
The peculiarity of Foursquare is that it blends the distillate in a continuous column and in a pot still directly before putting it in the barrels. Currently 90% of the production is put into ageing. Richard Seale, while having a state-of-the-art distillery, is as much a traditionalist and purist as an authentic rum producer. His rums are free of any component foreign to the raw material used, so no sugars or flavourings, no chips.

The partnership between Richard Seale and Luca Gargano was born out of a community of intentions and visions, cemented by an identical disdain for the colonial spirit, in an intellectual harmony that led to co-bottling, thanks to which the distillery was recently elected the best in the world.
The co-bottling began with the selection of Foursquare 2006: bottled in 2016, aged in a tropical climate, 3 years in ex-bourbon barrels and 7 years in ex-cognac oak casks, for a total of 2400 bottles.
After the first release, Richard and Luca selected other single blended wines that have become collectors' items: we offer them here in a unique vertical tasting not to be missed.
Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
