When Hector Henderson opened a small distillery near Port Askaig, on the stretch of sea that divides the island of Islay from the island of Jura, in 1846, he had no idea that it would become a Scotch giant. For throughout the twentieth century Caol Ila was always in operation, thanks to its production capacity and the fact that its malt is the basis of several blends. In 1972 Diageo totally rebuilt it and currently work is underway to expand it.
Instead, Sestante is the brand under which Ernesto Mainardi bottled magnificent single malt casks. After opening a bar in Parma under the same name and meeting George Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail, taking over the Italian distribution of their bottlings, Mainardi began his career as a selector in the early 1980s. This Caol Ila a exceptional degree of 65.3% is an example of the extraordinary quality of his bottlings: a mix of exotic fruit and fresh notes of sea and citrus blend with a gentle, coastal peat, reminiscent of burning fireplaces and fishing boats in port. A full palate for an unforgettable whiskey.
Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
