During the year 1795, when settlers were obliged to escape from Santo Domingo, a creole man, Antoine Am Peychaud, like many others found refuge in New Orleans, Louisiana. Here he started again his family business, opening a drugstore, and created a healing elixir based on gentian and other herbs. Besides being used for malaria and a wide variety of illness, it was soon clear that, mixed with brandy and absinthe, it gives the drink a ravishing flavor. So the drink Sazerac was born, official New Orleans cocktail in 2008!
