How to make cocktails at home without professional tools

How to make cocktails at home without professional tools

"I would like to make some good cocktails at home, but I don't have the right equipment".  If you too have said it or have heard it at least once, this might be the article for you.

Undoubtedly, some tools are indispensable for recreating fresh and tasty cocktails at home, just like in a bar or club - first of all a shaker and a jigger. A first thing to consider, however, is the fact that there are usually many drinks that can be replicated at home, but they are always technically rather simple, so they need fewer tools. The good news is that it is possible to find everyday objects in the kitchen that can be given a second life by disguising them as bar tools.

Mixers and jiggers

To replace the mixing spoon and even, to a small extent, the jigger, you can use a coffee spoon, ideally with a long handle. In addition to mixing cocktails such as Gin Tonic, you can also use this household item to dose sugar, or thicker syrups.

The jigger, on the other hand, occupies a separate chapter and can also be replaced very well by a coffee cup: this special measuring cup, which allows the exact dosage of alcohol, is really important for the success of a recipe, because 'going by eye' in mixology is really something one can only afford after a lot of experience in the field. The coffee cup is perfect in this respect because half-filled it is worth about 25-30 ml, thus making it easy to calculate the quantities for each cocktail.

In place of the jigger, an egg cup or a shot glass can also be used.

Shaker

The shaker is one of those iconic tools that immediately come to mind when talking about drinks, with the typical image of the bartender vigorously shaking - or shakera, in fact - that metal or glass vessel before pouring into the glass.

This is perhaps why many people think that it is not easy to replace such an essential tool. But no, because all you need to do is get a re-sealable canister, such as a sugar canister, to pour in all the ingredients and play Tom Cruise in the legendary period film Cocktail, which inspired generations of bartenders with its behind-the-counter acrobatics.

You can also use a thermos, or at least an airtight container.

How to make cocktails at home without professional tools

other tools

After shaking our cocktail, we will probably need to strain it: no problem, just use a tea strainer, or any type of tool with a mesh strainer that is easy to find in any kitchen.

The solutions are there, with a bit of creativity: a spoon to replace the ice scoop; a fork in place of fruit tongs, and then any bowl as an ice container, and even a teapot as an alternative to the mixing glass. A bit spartan, perhaps, but certainly useful and fun, and above all suited to the end result, which is to prepare excellent cocktails, for yourself or your loved ones, at home, without having to give anything up.

Only one thing you cannot compromise on when preparing your favourite drink: the quality of the ingredients. There, indeed, there is no alternative, also because the difference between a cocktail prepared with quality spirits and fresh juices and ingredients and one prepared to perfection can be felt.

Price per degree

Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.

Price per dosage

This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
