Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026 Edition is a limited-edition Japanese Pure Malt whisky and marks the first instalment in a new series that Nikka Whisky will dedicate, from 2026 to 2030, to the fundamental elements that define the identity of Taketsuru Pure Malt. The project will accompany the brand towards its 30th anniversary in 2030, exploring a different aspect each year of the production philosophy born from the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka and a central figure in the history of Japanese whisky.
Taketsuru Pure Malt is created exclusively from a blend of malt whiskies produced at Nikka’s two historic distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Two locations and two profoundly different production styles, designed specifically to offer blenders a range of complementary spirits. Yoichi, founded in 1934 on the island of Hokkaido, produces malt whiskies that are more structured and deep, characterised by peaty and smoky notes; Miyagikyo, founded in 1969 in Miyagi Prefecture, offers a more elegant, smooth and fruity style. It is from the balance between these two distinct characters that the distinctive character of Taketsuru Pure Malt is born.
The Essentials 2026 Edition focuses on one of the most distinctive features of Nikka’s production: the historic coal-fired direct-heated distillation at the Yoichi distillery. Ever since its foundation, the stills at Yoichi have been heated directly by a coal-fired flame, a traditional technique that is now extremely rare, even within the Scotch whisky industry. The high temperatures reached during distillation contribute to the creation of an intense and structured spirit, capable of expressing depth, toasted notes, malty richness and a characteristic smoky note.
What makes this first release in the Essentials series even more significant is the inclusion in the blend of rare batches of whisky distilled in 2000 at both Yoichi and Miyagikyo. The year 2000 was, in fact, when Taketsuru Pure Malt made its debut: a direct link between the brand’s origins and this new collection dedicated to its identity.

Ireland and Scotland have always contended over the paternity of the invention of whisky, however, there are no official documents and we will not go into this centuries-old dispute, but will rely on...

The Japanese way to whisky is characterised by a continuous striving for excellence through obsessive attention to detail. As if with every drop of distillate produced, one can get closer and closer to...
Distillates have different alcoholpercentages. So, we have defined a parameter allowing you to better understand and compare different prices. This parameter is calculated by dividing the bottle price by the alcohol content. The alcohol content (or strength) is the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in the distillate.
This parameter indicates the price of a single 4cl dosage of distillate. It is calculated by dividing the price of the bottle by its quantity (expressed in cl), then multiplying by the centilitres of the recommended single dose, as average in cocktail recipes.
